Techno Mugger Targets Pokemon Go Players, Kingsport Police Say. five victims known by the police, culprit at large, and two more that arrived behind the closed door of malaise’s clinic four days ago. a vigilante duo whose nightly patrol also doubled as a method for ’hatching eggs’.
sahika did not dignify that explanation of their injuries with a reply. she kept her flickering interest on shining pen lights in eyes and on the topic of the tracker – the mental link – the mildly concussed psychic had landed on the mugger.
the link by itself was not enough. they planned their counterattack on her cheap, clinic cots and they needed someone who knew those programmes. or these applications? whatever they are called now, t3kna knows and malaise will defer to her as she passed on word to her.
sahika almost does not defer to the vigilantes and their plan though. this is due to the fact both malaise and t3kna are planned to be bait.
bait out on a late night in sutton park with phone screens glaring green and, aside from the vigilantes on standby, all alone.
except three things are pulsing on the screen of the phone she is holding. tiny, plastic-looking creatures. she stares at them. had she not just been skipping grey text?
“what are these?” sahika says, holding out the galaxy screen sharply to the girl beside her. the fine fabric of her saree twists with her. it was an outfit picked with the forethought she could drape its fabric to shade her face. yet the stern nature of her expression is still visible as she questions, “is this the hacking?”

misty was obsessed with pokemon go.
a lot of people were, actually. it warmed her heart to see people getting together, playing the game, meeting new people and seeing new places. plus she was fervidly trying to catch all the pokemon without cheating, as easy as it would be.
which is why she wasn't too upset about being bait with malaise, who she called mala, even though she did all of her damage digitally, behind a computer screen.
still, she trusted mala. their friendship was an odd one: an older indian woman -- a doctor-turned-vigilante -- and a young korean-american woman who had a deep love for computers.
misty felt kind of weird wandering the park at night with no one else around, but she was happy to help catch a perp and also happy to get some much needed steps for her eggs. when she had a lot of work to do, she didn't get a chance to do much walking.
she was just about to tap a vulpix that had popped up near her trainer -- who had purple hair because it was cool, even though her own was a rich brown -- when mala shoved the glowing screen of her samsung over misty's own iphone 6 plus.
"oh, you got through the first part of the tutorial!" misty said happily. "aw, mala, your trainer is cute!"
but that wasn't what the other woman had asked. "okay, so there's three starters. charmander, the orange one, is a little lizard. he's a fire type and my favorite," she said, putting much emphasis on 'favorite.'
"squirtle, the blue one, is a little turtle thing and he has water powers. and bulbasaur is a little dinosaur thing with a bulb on his back. he has grass powers.
"you just tap which one you want, it's super easy!" misty was beaming.

t3kna’s bright tone is met with an impassive expression from malaise. her upper lip is a tremble away from a sneer. she watches the trainer frozen in motion yet still walking against the green screen. she chose purple hair too. pokemon go did not include grey as a hair colour. sahika does not blame them.
charmander, squirtle and what was that the last one– bulmasaur? the logical progression is to choose one. she does not hesitate in pulling back her phone and pressing a finger against the orange lizard.
her phone’s screen explodes into the park’s surroundings. she blinks, lifting up the phone. in the low light, it seems the park cannot pick up too much and the bench is barely visible beyond the screen is barely visible. what is on the screen are arrows. sahika gives out a low noise of suffering, turns mechanically in the direction and reacts with another noise of surprise when the orange lizard points into her screen. with it comes a chirpy tune and saihka immediately reaches up and switches her phone to what she remembers is silent. the park returns to quiet.
sahika then presses against her screen again and the ball moves with her finger. she has memorised the motion from the people she’s seen on their phones around her. she flicks it and it bounds past the creature, rolling smaller and smaller until it is a speck next to the park bench.
it’s super easy, t3kna said.
sahika flicks again against her screen and the ball hits the charmander. a ‘nice!’ flashes against the screen. three shakes and it is done.
“super easy,” sahika repeats. her tone is joyless but she doesn’t skip the lines of text as she does before.
“is that all?” when sahika looks to misty but it seems they are not alone. two people walk the distance behind them. their hands are linked, sahika can hear the laughter from where she is and she is able to see that their phones are raised.
“are they playing it?”
