Intelligent, responsible, confident - the person you can count on to walk in and take control of a chaotic situation and instill some common sense. Straightforward and sometimes too reasonable for her own good, but with a playful streak that easily softens her highly driven demeanor. She's a girl prone to self-deprecation and light quips to brighten a heavy mood. Warm, funny, but maybe even a little bit intimidating in how unflappable she seems. It takes a lot to get under her skin, and even if you manage it, she's also pretty good at keeping up a poker face. [break][break] Of course there's only so much a person can handle on their own; she's still getting the hang of mitigating some of the weight she places on her shoulders. The level of personal responsibility she holds herself to makes it difficult for her to "force" anything on people around her who are willing to help. What can come off as controlling is more a self-sacrificing streak that won't let her put a voice to her struggles. She can be critical, guilt-ridden, and high strung. When things get to be too much, brooding moodiness and attempts to isolate herself are common. [attr="class","subcat"]biographical details > She and her parents moved to New York just before she was two as her mother pursued a career in fashion design. [break][break] > Mother quickly became estranged from the family when success came her way. Was soon spending most of the year in Europe while Lettie and her father remained in the States. [break][break] > Father had trouble coping as he struggled to find a steady job, and wound up exploring business opportunities that weren't exactly legal. Petty crime soon turned into something bigger and he ended up in over his head. [break][break] > Neither of her parents had abilities, but Lettie's ability to "see" the flow of time and space manifested from the time of her birth. Her parents understandably thought she had a overactive imagination, and already being a very serious and studious child, she gave up arguing otherwise early on and simply kept the mostly pointless ability to herself. [break][break] > By the time she was six her father had gotten embroiled in syndicate affairs and Lettie was used to being carted around to various seedy locales. She would sit by herself and do homework and practice for her dance classes while her father did business. [break][break] > A dispute with a rival syndicate would eventually lead to one of the bars her father had meetings at being shot up, and Lettie, doing her homework in a back room like always, was the lone survivor of a massacre. First on the scene would be another villain in his own right, and a superpowered one at that, involved in organized crime in New Jersey and in town brokering information for the two rival syndicates in question. Finding the little girl left alone just yards away from a bloodbath, and bring the vaguely principled sort of mobster, Jalil Sohrad decided to take her in until whatever remained of her family could come for her. [break][break] > It was weeks before authorities could track her mother down in Europe, and by that time Jalil and Lettie already had a closer father/daughter bond than she'd ever achieved with her birth father. And maybe her mother picked up on this. She stayed in town for a few months to see to Lettie and set her late husband's affairs in order, but she didn't both to delve deep enough to register the organized crime aspect of the whole event. She had sized Jalil up to be a reasonable parental figure in her daughter's life, and left the pair together without much ceremony. Lettie went to live with Jalil back in Kingsport, in a sprawling Windsor Heights mansion. [break][break] > She had a startlingly normal adolescence for having been raised by a supervillain. She knew of and openly opposed his exploits, but he didn't push them on her, in fact doing all he could to shield her from them, and they found a balance of sorts. Guilt over his actions and those of her birth father before him would become a regular part of her though. [break][break] > Her powers, or perhaps more accurately her peculiar state of being, finally became apparent when a group of men Lettie knew to be her father's enemies visited the house and Jalil addressed them as long-time friends. When it became clear to her that they were fishing for dangerous information that Jalil would never have given them before, she managed to pull him aside and call attention to the threat and they were discovered to be operating under some experimental reality warping device. [break][break] > Life continued without extraordinary event. She met her future boyfriend, Ace Venchurro, briefly in high school but with several grades between them and her schedule heavy with running start courses and extracurriculars, they didn't interact much. Graduated top of her class and already nearly done with an associate's degree, and continued studiously on through to attend the Dunwich School. Reconnected with Ace at the music shop and lounge he ran alongside his mother at the time, and started dating less than a year later. [break][break] > Currently dancing and acting, and helping out around the shop and splitting her time between living in the upstairs apartment with Ace and back home with Jalil in Windsor Heights. She would be aware if the world entered a Groundhog Day-style loop that no one else noticed, or if someone decided to retroactively remove Greenland from existence. She has no warping abilities herself, however. [attr="class","subcat"]REALITY ANCHORING AND TEMPORAL PROTECTION Lettie is immune to reality warping effects. If someone tries to write her out of existence or make direct changes to her as a person, it just won't work. She would still be indirectly effected in some ways by changes made to the realities around her, like if her parents or friends were altered in ways that would by extension effect her life, but while circumstances can change, she would remain fundamentally the same. This presents the possibility of her becoming some kind of anomaly if her existence directly conflicts with the current version of reality, like if her parents ceased to exist. In the same vein, she'll retain full memory of how previous timelines have played out if anyone tries to rewrite history. [attr="class","subcat"]LIMITED CHAOTIC VISION Her only non-passive ability, and the only way she knew she had any powers at all for a long time, Lettie can in a sense literally "see" the passage of time and the inter-workings of reality on a limited scale. When she activates the skill, she can read a small chunk of time and space that take infograph form in various and seemingly random ways, sometimes appearing to her as a branching-off web, or as streaming blocks of letter and numbers at others. It's not a detailed view that allows her to view specific events, but rather an overview of sorts with key events vaguely apparent to her. She can look at the present and see how it reacts with what came just before and what comes immediately after it and get a sense of the "architecture" of the thing. It's ambiguous and nigh impossible to actually understand, and not terribly useful to be honest. At best she could probably say with a degree of certainty that, "Something happened here that seemed insignificant, but actually triggered a whole butterfly effect's worth of nonsense." [attr="class","subcat"]METAPHYSICAL PATTERN RECOGNITION In essence, Lettie is just very genre savvy, and somewhat prone to déjà vu. When you stare at space and time enough you start to be able to predict things in the way a cynical movie critic gets to be able to see a plot twist coming from a mile off. It's not actual clairvoyance, but rather a augmented sense of what's likely to happen based on subconscious knowledge of what's happened in similar situations before. [attr="class","subcat"]PARALLEL VIEWING Rarely, Lettie experiences hallucination-like visions that actually seem to be events occurring in her current location, but in a parallel universe. They can last anywhere from a few second to a couple of minutes, and she has no control over them. [attr="class","subcat"]PERFORMING ARTS She's already a relatively accomplished dancer and stage actress, dedicated to both from a young age. More recently she's been exploring singing a bit more seriously, as well as dabbling with some instruments, and has an anonymous song cover channel online where she posts her practice attempts. |
