If that were true, one could only imagine the conversation the Fates might have had when selecting Ozwin Strand’s thread. Oz was born to London dwellers, their first–and only–child. Oz would never know his mother, because she died a little less than two years after he was born, killed by a mutant. It was a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the death of Ozwin’s mother could not fail to shape his future. Ozwin’s father became bitter and vengeful against mutants, and Powered individuals in general, as a result of losing the woman he loved. [break][break] When Ozwin began displaying powers of his own shortly after his ninth birthday, his father’s attitude towards him changed drastically as well. He became harsh and abusive towards his son without ever explaining why, causing Ozwin to feel that he must be ‘wrong’ or unacceptable somehow. Oz’s peers at school were not much better; while public opinion of Supers was increasingly positive as a result of the Initiative’s defense of Earth during the 2008 invasion, there were plenty of people who were afraid of what might happen should Supers go bad. Oz tried desperately to control his powers, but they refused to ‘obey’ for the longest time, causing him extreme embarrassment and cutting him off from a social life with other people his age. On occasion, he was even targeted for harassment and bullying. [break][break] When Ozwin was fourteen, his home situation had become so bad that he was relocated to a foster home. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Ozwin was moved to several different foster families until he was legally old enough to live on his own, and in that time he never was able to receive the love and acceptance he wanted. He did, however, grow extremely skilled at adapting to his situation, manipulating the people around him to think and act as he wanted without even realizing that they were being controlled like puppets on strings. Add in the fact that Oz had been displaying antisocial tendencies bordering on sociopathy for several years now, and it was not exactly a surprise that he became a villain in the end. By the time he was nineteen years old, Oz had already participated in numerous small-scale crimes, mostly robberies. He eventually moved to Kingsport, in hopes of finding others who, like him, did not fit society’s iron-cast mold. The only difficulty was in determining where in the sprawling city to live; after all, when you’re going to make the world burn, it always pays to have a good seat. He can move threads singularly or as a group, and he is also capable of unraveling or combining threads in order to create constructs, the size and shape of which are only dependent on how much thread is available. Ozwin’s power does have some weaknesses, most notably that he can only manipulate threads that are in his line of sight. To put it briefly, if he can’t see it, he can’t control it. Also, if Oz takes his attention away from threads that he is controlling, they will revert back to being ‘normal’ threads again. The same thing will happen if Oz is mentally incapacitated (i.e. by being knocked out or drugged) or if he is killed. [attr="class","subcat"]Psionic Sheath As a byproduct of Ozwin’s mental control, any threads that he manipulates are covered in an invisible psionic ‘sheath’ of sorts. This not only means that his threads are nearly impossible to break or cut, but if Oz is focused enough on his target, there is practically nothing that he cannot cut or break in pieces with the threads under his control. In battle, Oz capitalizes on this ability to create constructs (such as swords, whips, drills, etc.) to cause physical damage by cutting, piercing, or pummeling the enemy, as well as defensive creations (such as shields, armor, etc.). With that said, Ozwin’s psychic sheath is visible to telepathic individuals, appearing as a dim, white glow around the threads. If someone possesses equal or greater mental strength than Oz, a telekinetic attack could overcome Oz’s sheath and break his control of the threads. |
