It was easy to find the Everglades once he knew where it was. It occupied a great deal of the map and was, quite frankly, hard to miss once you found yourself in the right region of the world. He'd heard rumors before of a continent to the far west. He couldn't say for sure why Artemis had chosen to be here of all places, but Apollo supposed anywhere she could hunt was as good a place as any.
...From what he'd noticed, places where a person could hunt were few and far between in this modern age. It wasn't so at Olympus, but Apollo had no intention of suggesting Artemis return there.
After he saw a pale fawn--and it saw him--Apollo stopped wandering through the Everglades. He could try to locate Artemis himself, but there was no reason to. This was her land. She knew he was here. She'd find him soon enough.

The fawn approaches him, sure-footed despite the uncertainties of the marsh ground. She wasn't a native to the Everglades, but this specific fawn wasn't meant to be noticed unless someone was actively looking.
It only takes about three minutes for Artemis to arrive through the tall grass. She wears brown-green camo and carries a rifle in her hands. She could have been mistaken for a park ranger. Artemis removes her sunglasses, her face immistakable.
"How is mother?" He would know better than she did, and it is one of the few victories that she allows Apollo to claim.

| "In full health, and I would say full content as well but she misseth thee so." It was true enough. Apollo had asked his mother if she'd want to return to Earth with him, but Leto--like so many of the gods older than him--was not as fond of Earth as he was.
Four hundred years not a terribly long for Olympians, but it was long enough that Apollo felt remiss for standing here as if he'd seen Artemis only yesterday.
He reached for her (from the side that wasn't holding the rifle, for he'd learned what those were for already) for a brief embrace. It was, especially in light of neither of them being manly, a suitably manly hug.
He had the decency to look guilty for a second when he said, "I fear I worry'd her. Fore I left, I thought to see the future here. It... was not good." artemis

"She has you." Artemis said simply, as if it settled the matter. Everyone knew that the moon was a mere substitute for when the sun refused to bare his face. In many ways, she is grateful for Apollo. Apollo, who would bear the responsibilities of the pantheon while she roamed free.
Nobody else could have attempted what Apollo just did without her wrath. She holds him awkwardly, as if she had long since forgotten the feeling of physical contact with another being. Which isn't too far from the truth.
"Brother, tell me what you know." Not saw, for sight is a wishy-washy thing. She would not accuse Apollo of such. apollo | let us reward our female offspring |

| "An ill portent." That much wasn't a concern. Apollo received omens all the time, most of them worse than the last. "I know little, but I spoke this: It alights for Earth, the one born from the void and bearing the fires of life and death. It is creation untempered, destruction unrestrained, whom none from the heights of Mount Olympus shall defeat."
It had been specific enough for him to look for Artemis. Apollo didn't worry about her as a general rule. He needn't have visited her this time either--it was not the first time this planet had it coming--but it had been a long time, and this prophecy did seem worse than the others.
He really shouldn't have told their mother. artemis

She thinks about it for a brief second before replying: "How do we contain it?" We, as in Artemis and Apollo. Not we as in Olympus. Not unless it was absolutely necessary. "How long?"
Artemis would rather have a partial earth than no earth at all.

| "Let it destroyeth all that lieth in its path, and with life destroy'd, it destroyeth itself in turn," he intoned.
That, Apollo couldn't help but feel, was not a good plan. He added, in his own voice, "But if thou art asking for mine opinion, I pray we find another solution." It was an unnecessary point. He didn't think for a second that Artemis thought let the world die with the upcoming threat could be a good plan.
Apollo gestured for Artemis to wait for her second question. "It is always here. It is always everywhere." artemis |

For a second, she wonders if this is just one of Apollo's ruses. It wouldn't be the first time that Apollo had lied to her.
"Have you come with a better proposal, or has mother asked you to bring me to Olympus?" She can't imagine why he would have come all this way otherwise.

| The last time he'd tricked her had been for a very good reason. The countless times he'd lied to her was merely part of what a little brother does to entertain himself when there's naught else better to do.
Apollo looked away. "Mother requested that of me, aye. It matters little. I hardly believe thou wouldst return with me if I asked. So I stay. I pray that I might help." artemis

She doesn't fault Leto for that. It is a mother's duty to worry for her children.
"I would not drag you into a situation that I thought unwinnable." She turns around so that Apollo will not see her worry. Instead, Artemis turns her gaze upon the Everglades. A microcosm of life that remained deceptively quiet, despite the constant activity. "Who else knows?"

| "All Olympus knows that I journey'd to Earth with dark portents. I told Athena all that I spoke, but the others are too content to quarrel among themselves to pay any mind to Earth." Earth was the past for them, a rock in a faraway place that no longer provided the energy that had once been so bountiful. That was true, but Apollo was still fond of it and humanity nevertheless.
He's quiet for a moment, letting Artemis observe the Everglades. He wondered if Artemis had kept in touch with the Olympians still on Earth. Somehow, he doubted it.
"I found Ares before I found thee. Or he found me first," he said, as neutrally as he could. He worried that Artemis and Ares might have fought. Given the nature of Olympians, it wasn't an unreasonable fear, but Artemis had always been unlike the rest. "He has allied himself with this... Initiative?" artemis

She has heard of the Initiative. She didn't know the details or the personas, but even the aloof Artemis had talked to a park ranger or a fisherman occasionally. Stress on the occasionally.
Artemis truly respected Ares as a warrior, but he did not inspire her confidence where a human organization was concerned. She thought him a bit of a busybody, never thinking much of the consequences.
Or perhaps, an unfair assessment from a woman who was noncommittal towards even her own family.
Artemis hopes that this story is building up towards something. It should, if Apollo has not changed since she last saw him. She gives a slight nod of the head, a sign to keep going on with the story.

| Artemis showed no visceral reaction against their half-brother. Good. Navigating the trenches between family members was a sorry business.
"They have taken it upon themselves to protect the world. A mortal arrogance, but I do not think it entirely unwise. So far, I have not minded working with them. Nay, perhaps I have even found enjoyment in it."
They had asked for his name, which he'd given because he had no reason not to. They'd also offered him a flying machine to take him to Florida, which at first Apollo had considered an insult. The might of the gods had waned, but he certainly didn't need a crutch to travel a few hundred miles south.
"They have provided me assistance." He paused and reconsidered those words. "Rather the intention was there. Their actual assistance was unneeded. T'is thine assistance I value more, loathe am I to pry thee from the wilds." artemis

Artemis knew the feeling. Too often the locals would wonder what a teenage girl was doing out here all alone in the wilds. A few had offered a hitchhike and still others had offered to help her call her parents.
The hunting rifle had managed to offset some of that reaction, she's found.
"These are unusual circumstances, brother." He had picked the right person. Artemis loathed to get involved in wars, but this is not a war. This time, there's no need to figure out which members of the family got pissy over whom. They just have to figure out the problem and deal with it. Plus, the end of the world was a pretty compelling incentive. "If you need my assistance, then you will have it."
Not a light promise for Artemis. Though she doesn't know what form that assistance will actually take.

| He smiled then, boyish as he would be for the rest of time. "Thank you."
Apollo didn't know how much Artemis paid attention to the world. "The Initiative furnish'd me with an abode in Kingsport. I shall return thither." He was almost apologetic, because he wanted to spend more time with Artemis, when he added, "I fear I have not thy fondness for... marshes, such as these. I will await thee there?"
He would offer to go with her, but he planned to travel by light. For him, Kingsport was a short distance from here. For those that didn't--well, in hindsight, maybe he should've taken that steel flying contraption here after all. artemis |
