[break][break] Even before his birth Hera had resented him. She manipulated his mother Semele to her death by having her burn before Zeus’s godliness. Though she didn’t count on Zeus prying the unborn baby from Semele’s womb and sew it into his own thigh, ‘giving birth’ to Dionysus himself. [break][break] But that wasn’t the end of Hera’s vendetta against Dionysus. As a baby she threw him to the Titans and they tore him to shreds. However, the merciful titan Rhea brought him him back to life earning him the title of ‘Twice-Born’. After that Zeus sent him away to live on Earth, among nymphs, to protect him from Hera’s wrath. [break][break] Dionysus set out upon the world experiencing many adventures, including exacting revenge on his human family who disowned his mother by turning his aunts into maenads and having them rip their sons apart. He soon became fascinated with humanity and how they were the only creatures on the Earth to be self-realized. [break][break] Though Dionysus pitied humans because of how short and fragile their lives were, it was why he blessed them with wine, he was also impressed with how much they could do considering to an Olympian they were just insects. But most of all he loved how much they valued their insignificant lives. It amused him to no end. [break][break] But humans were self-destructive and scared creatures, so much so that they’d give up the freedom they were blessed with at birth to another human for their own safety. It made him sick. Dionysus wanted to have humanity realize their true potential as creatures able to seize their own destiny. [break][break] Dionysus’s principles of freethinking, self-indulgence, and self-realization attracted many humans looking for something to fulfill their lives. Through the ages his cult has remained active and loyal from the shadows. Though Dionysus himself has no desire to become involved in world domination or destruction, he merely wants to ‘free’ humanity from their own inhibitions. He does not age. Unlike his siblings however, he was granted his Olympians physiology as a result of being "birthed" from Zeus himself. He still has mortal blood running through his veins but the blessing from Zeus has given him a resilient body capable of taking much more damage than a mortal's, and protection from disease, poison, and radiation. [break][break] Olympians, like many ancient "deities," were once capable of miracles at-will when on Earth, due to a natural ability to harness Earth's energies. This energy has evolved enough (or simply depleted) over the centuries that Olympians are limited to small boons of luck or curses of minor misfortune. [break][break] When an Olympian dies, their soul is sent to Underworld. [break] [attr="class","subcat"]MIND MANIPULATION Dionysus can instill feelings of relaxation and bliss with the flick of his wrist. However he can also ravage the mortal mind with madness, creating an insatiable appetite for pleasure and force people to act out their most inner desires but also may cause irreparable damage to the psyche. [break][break] His wine, specially concocted for his followers enjoyment, gives the drinker feelings of pure ecstasy and freedom. Dionysus does not view his powers as "brainwashing", he argues that this is the true nature of humans. [break][break] Mortals with weak psyches are easier to control then those with strong minds (i.e. people who suffer from mental illness, the uneducated, people under extreme stress, the repressed, ect.). His powers however, do not work on higher beings such as other Olympians. [attr="class","subcat"]ILLUSIONS A master at the manipulation of the mind, Dionysus can also create vivid and realistic illusions such as changing his appearance seemingly morphing into other people or objects. [break][break] His basic illusions can be seen through or even dispelled by people with an affinity for magic, however this does not mean they aren’t susceptible to his spells entirely they're merely more difficult to trick. [break][break] He can also cause people to experience lucid hallucinations, ranging from the benign bliss of standing in a grassy meadow to a floating horrific nightmarish void. He’s also not opposed to figuring out his enemies most intimate secrets and using them against them. [attr="class","subcat"]EMPATHY An empath, though not in the traditional sense, Dionysus can sense desire. He can hear the inner most desires of a person's soul, whether it be to quit their miserable job or to have an intimate affair, Dionysus can hear what your soul is crying out for and isn't above using these feelings to manipulate. [break][break] Like his mind manipulation, the effectiveness of his empathic abilities is only as strong as the person he is near. People of weaker psyches are easier to read, while stronger more guarded minds may prove to be more tricky. Higher beings are not susceptible to this ability. [attr="class","subcat"]COMBAT SKILLS/VAST INTELLECT As a prehistoric being who was made to live out his childhood on Earth, Dionysus did not simply wait on an island for his father to retrieve him. Learning many survivalist skills from the nymphs he lived with he chose to wander the Earth in search of purpose and to entertain his ever present boredom. [break][break] Dionysus was a voyager, he traversed across all seven sees throughout the centuries learning all he could about human philosophy, advances in human technology, and most importantly the inner workings of the human mind. He became a pupil of the centaur Chiron, who taught Dionysus of all he knew as he did the warrior Achilles before him. [break][break] His appetite to understand humans was insatiable, he studied their battles and wars and grew into an adept fighter, swordsman, and tactician. Though he was never one for confrontation, he preferred the role of instigator. [attr="class","subcat"]AFFINITY FOR DEATH Dionysus like all gods is able to perform miracles, however he was given a gift at his second birth. From the moment Rhea sewed him back together and breathed new life into him Dionysus had a strange gift. [break][break] As a child the nymphs would find him breaking the necks of small birds and rodents, only to have them regain life seconds later. A gift from Rhea, Dionysus could revive the dead and call their souls back from the Underworld. [break][break] The nymphs terrified of this power and Dionysus’s affinity for death told Zeus, who sealed Dionysus’s ability to return life. However, Dionysus still retains a connection to death and in turn the Underworld, thanks to being the Twice-Born. For that reason he is able to enter the Underworld without repercussions. |
