[break][break] Reuben doesn't like talking about life before the accident. His therapists told him it would be best to move on, and move on he did. He did anything to keep himself busy. Soon, he exhausted the hospital's collection of old magazines, and he begged the nurses for anything to read. One nurse gave him a medical textbook to shut him up, but unintentionally changed Reuben's life. The moment he had enough strength to push himself in a wheelchair, he sent off his college application. His parents, as expected of well-off New Yorkers, paid for his education without question, but the semesterly meeting for a check was the only contact he had with them for a while. They didn't know what to do with a crippled son. [break][break] Reuben knew exactly what to do with himself. He coasted through college and med school, refusing to study unless it was absolutely necessary, and pulling the disabled card whenever he could. Some of his instructors thought he was ridiculous. What kind of person would seek care from somebody who could hardly care for himself? Reuben showed them, surpassing most of his able-bodied peers and refusing to let stairs stand in his way. [break][break] Partway through med school, he met the love of his life. A gorgeous woman that laughed her ass off when he fell out of his chair and into a snowbank. They married his junior year. A year later, when the class of 2001 graduated, he had to rush from the ceremony to meet her at the hospital and say hello to the newest members of the Maddison family: Ellie Judith Maddison and Gabriel Matthew Maddison. Life went well for a few months. Near the end of her maternity leave, in September, Reuben's wife saw a side of her husband she didn't even know existed. He stayed ridiculously long hours at the hospital, working around the clock to help provide the best care to the patients that never stopped rushing in during that disaster. [break][break] The long hours persisted even after the dust settled. Reuben apologized, and she accepted it, for a while. It was when he missed their first day of school that she put her foot down. Now out of residency and a full-fledged doctor, he began spending even more time at the hospital just to spite her. The last straw was when coming home from another late night turned to blows between them both. [break][break] Things weren't working out. Mom got them during the school year, Dad got them during the summer and some weekends, and they switched off during the holidays. Reuben used the first year after the divorce to throw himself head-first into work, capitalizing on another disaster, the invasion of 2008, to do his best. He rolled out of the office when it was all hands on deck and scrubbed up when times got desperate. His performance gained the notice of a little-known organization at the time. They needed somebody to help research and take care of the weirdos in spandex running around saving the world. [break][break] In 2009, Reuben became the Director of Medicine at The Initiative. He's been there ever since, leading premiere research on mutant physiology. His current project is developing methods in recognizing abilities before they even surface in individuals, but fickle investors have made that difficult. They're more interested in seeing the limits of mutants or triggering abilities in mundane people than actually seeking knowledge. This, combined with children who are definitely teenagers, has made Reuben a little irritable as of late. Lashing out at a member of the board for a terrible budget has put him on thin ice with the higher-ups. They've kept him for now, but his future at The Initiative is shaky.
