Azrael stared at the two fairground tickets that he had bought, flicking through the folds of the material with his fingers. He had gotten them a few days prior to Saturday. To him, sitting around in some park, having popcorn and playing fairground games, that really wasn't something that he'd usually do. Yet, for some lady he didn't really know too much about he had decided to mess around with the idea of going out and trying it for once in his life.
What was he doing? This was pathetic. Moreso the fact that he had to take a chance on this, rather than something she actually wanted to do. Nevertheless, he didn't have much else to lose. If Evelyn didn't want to come, he'll spend the rest of the time prepping, and if she did, he could spend a few good hours hanging out with someone he liked, as opposed to brining in his plan to destroy whatever sabotaged him.
He was dressed in a torino red polo, his hair tied into a tail behind him and his glasses tucked into the breastpocket of his shirt. Regardless of how he portrayed it, he still didn't like the feeling of being rejected, even if there were things far more pressing. He pulled out his phone and began typing to the psychologist stationed above.
EVELYN: That doesn't seem a fair trade does it? lol. Give me some time, I'll think about that second date, I've got a lot going on JOHN: Hey, I'm downstairs, let me know if you're too busy.

It was rare for her to make time for herself out of work aside from the usual. Trips to the store, spare time to read, or write reports and manage schedules outside of work, these things were what she did in her spare time. It was rare for her to leave her house much to actually 'do' things that involved socialization. She was very much a hermit out of work, but being an active people person throughout the day made her feel less guilty for not going out in the evening.
That being said, for her to make another attempt to go and do something so soon after a first date, it really said something. Evelyn was intrigued by this man, John Gray. He made her a bit nervous albeit, but that reluctant edge made him interesting to her too. Despite what he said about the dangers of associating with him, she was more curious about the person behind whatever he did to get himself into trouble. Maybe only then she felt she'd be comfortable knowing about his past.
It was easier to forgive someone after you got to know them, after all.
She changed in her office, wearing jeans for once in what must have been weeks. They were still form fitting, showing off what legs she had, laced ankle boots instead of her usual heels, but another one of her thin tank tops was worn if only to keep herself from getting too hot. It was warm and muggy during this time of the year. She felt claustrophobic in heavier clothes.
As she ventured from her office, leaving most of her things aside from a small purse, she got looks from her receptionist as she told the woman tasks she needed to tend to before close. It was strange to see Evelyn out of her work clothes normally, and even more so while at work. Her coworkers were probably confused as ever, but she paid no mind and left them with questions that she wasn't going to answer.
She didn't respond to John's message, but stepped outside and glanced over the street looking for his car as she walked down the front steps to the side walk.

A temp could probably do better with their feelings during an interview than he could explain himself about the way he was feeling now. Azrael watched as wisps of his breath gently flew into the air condensing itself as he alternated the temperature out of boredom, making sure no one was watching. He flicked his tickets, pocketed them, pulled them back out, pocketed them, checked his phone, flipped a coin. And just as he was about to conclude that she wasn't coming, she arrived just outside the stairs of her office.
Azrael shifted from leaning on his car. He often had to remind himself that unlike most of the women he had known, Evelyn was one of the few who were truly successful at what they did and was happy doing it. And that by pulling her out of it, he was drawing a choice between her work and his time. And he appreciated the fact that she could make the distinction. Dressed in that tanktop and those form fitting jeans, he couldn't help but grin. "I'd say you look great, but you don't seem like you want to hear from this asshole." He said pointing to himself, chuckling. "I'm only being an ass because I miss you though, so uhh, forgive me at some point."
He pulled himself up from the car and gently lifted her head, greeting her by way of pressing his lips against hers. He opened the door for his date, then got in the car himself and began to drive to the start of the Fairgrounds. As they drove along the road to the fairgrounds, Azrael briefly looked towards Evelyn. "Did something come up?" He said, looking towards her. "You seem to be a little distant today."

Once her eyes found him beside his car, she grinned at the sight of him. Completely unaware of his former idling with powers she almost wasn't aware of, Evelyn walked to him to close the distance and stopped when she was standing before the man. She scoffed at his words, patting his chest to scold him for calling himself something she wouldn't. "Don't put words in my mouth. You're not an asshole. I've dated worse."Partially a joke, and also being genuine, she played it off as the former regardless. Strangely it felt nice to be missed. Though she couldn't imagine that he would miss her much, even if he had thought of her a little it was nice to think about. Evelyn had certainly thought about him, or else she wouldn't have taken further measures to meet with the man. Stepping up on her toes so slightly as he kissed her. "Consider yourself forgiven." She replied with a grin before settling back on her heels and parting from him to hop into his car. Feigning the urge to check her phone for unread emails while they drove, she glanced his way as he asked about her sense of focus throughout the day. Admittedly it had been busy as always. "I had quite a few appointments today. Sometimes the weekends are the only real time I can meet with patients due to their own schedules." She hoped it didn't bother him, but at least this time she had a legitimate reason aside from her feelings of nerves. "But apparently I am a miracle worker." Grinning at her success for freeing up some time for herself, she shrugged her shoulders. "How was your day? I apologize if you were waiting for my messages." Azrael

A rush of blood flushed to the base of his head as their lips met, he hoped his neck didn't turn red in response. To help with the height difference, John wrapped an arm under her waist and lifted her up slightly, before pulling away slowly. "Yes ma'am," He replied, smirking in response. "Alright, let's have some fun."
The drive to the fair grounds wasn't too long, but given it was rush hour back home, the traffic meant that there was quite a bit of time between her office and the place they needed to go. He could understand that at least, "Mm, I imagine it does get a little bit busier on a day where most people get their breaks huh?" But it brung up something else that worried him a little bit more, in that Evelyn really didn't have too much time to herself, to develop things that she could want outside of her work. He couldn't exactly say anything against that though, he knew exactly how it felt to love work so much to the detriment of everything else. He noticed the buzz of her phone, but she seemed to resist the urge of using it, that didn't go unnoticed to him. "I guess being able to do superhuman feats rubs off on you hm? Superhuman time management, that sounds like a great power to have." He chuckled.
"That's alright," He said, looking into her eyes, "Work tends to bring the worst of us haha. Speaking of which," John transitioned into the question asked beforehand. "Work went fine today, though I don't actually keep up with the day to day running of what I do... I trust my associates in the UK. One day, maybe we can fly there."
So far at least, there haven't been many problems on that part, save for the fact that his absence was noticeably felt by his company. He felt he needed to be honest at this part. Evelyn didn't like being lied to, and he didn't need to lie, "I've been doubting myself for quite a while." He admitted, "Some nerves on my part, and some based on the reality of what's about to occur. I've been partially preparing myself, and partially just contemplating life. But nothing I can't handle so far. You'll be the first I come to if I feel like I'm in a bad place." He winked at her, then finally found a parking spot in the fair grounds.
As the car parked and he switched off the engine, John looked towards Evelyn. "Hey," He began, then leaned into her, leaning downwards onto her on the spot, using his body to basically pin her before she could exit the car. While they had a bit of privacy still, he anted up, gently biting down on her tongue, spreading open her mouth with his tongue and swapping his fluids with hers for the moment, before slipping out of her mouth. He trailed a small series of kisses from her lips to her jawline down the side of her neck, before stopping, looking back towards her and smiling. "This means a lot to me, thank you." Before pulling back, exiting the car and opening the door for her. "Come on." He said, offering her his hand.
The fairgrounds was completely packed with people. It was the weekend, and it wasn't as if John and Evelyn were the first people to think of a great date at a Fair. John wrapped his fingers in between hers, as they explored the sights and sounds of the carnival. Hundreds or bright, warm lights flickered against the midnight blue sky, as just as many sounds came from the many rides that were there. People mottled the streets as each game offered prizes of fluffy teddy bears and other soft toys. In the midst of walking, he turned towards Evelyn,
"So, I'm curious about you. Why'd you decide to become a psychologist? You're a smart lass, plenty of talents, gorgeous and mentally strong. You could have any job you wanted, so why go into this one?"

She smiled at him, bemused by his comment about her abilities to maintain herself on a superhuman level. She didn't see it that way, but she liked the sound of it. "Superhuman time management." She repeated, "I like that sound of that." Since he knew who she was, or heard of her before, she didn't need to explain to him she was human. It was practically advertised with her name.
She wondered infrequently to herself if he was a super, but such questions seemed too personal a thing to ask. Too often asking someone if they had powers when it wasn't completely obvious was putting them on the spot for blast, triggering potentially negative memories. She didn't want anyone around her to feel untrusted, and invalidated because they had a super human or unnatural ability straying from what was human. Still, not knowing what he really did was somewhat troubling to her if only because it gnawed at he curiosity more than what his potential powers could be if he had them at all. His statements involving it were so vague, but she nodded. He would tell her when he was ready, surely. As he continued, it did give her hope that she'd hear his story eventually.
"Alright," She'd replied, though more questions did arise - like what was going to occur? What was he going to have to do? - Evelyn shut them away and chose to let it go for now. When the car came to a stop, and he called out to her, she gave him a look over before he drew closer to her. It seemed so unnecessary to pin her like this, but it did make her anxious. Uncertain as to whether she liked that feeling or not, after the tongue tied kiss she did find that she preferred the sweeter pecks down her jawline. Evelyn lifted a hand to his shoulder as he got to her neck, breath slowing until he stopped.
She was slightly red faced when he looked up at her, and she looked at him. "You don't have to thank me," Evelyn had muttered, swallowing hard and sitting back up as he parted and exited the car to open her door. She took that time to run her fingers gently through her hair, tucking strands behind her right ear and stepping out as he offered a hand. She took it, grinning as he laced their fingers together.
It had been ages since she'd gone to something like this. She usually didn't partake in most city events, even though she heard all about them from her coworkers and employees. Sometimes she thought about going, but there was always a better reason not to. Evelyn kept closer to him so as not to bump into people, and at his question drew her attention to him. "You're sweet," She smiled, "But I've always found psychology fascinating even before I decided to pursue it. The brain is still a mysterious thing, but I guess what I like most about my work is that I get to talk to so many different people. Helping the very heroes that help save all of us, it's rewarding to me." Thanks to her patient base, popularity, and the risk of danger to her own life, she certainly made more money than most if not any psychologist in her field. "If I was going to be a doctor I didn't want it to be boring."

Evelyn was smaller, lighter, and soft, he thought to himself, as he tasted the subtle hints of coffee from her mouth, as he sucked down gently on her alabaster skin. Azrael felt the base instinct to go further than that, but he stopped himself from acting on it, they were at a Fair after all. John's eyes locked against hers as they parted, his face barely inches away, his breath running gently down her neck and collarbone, before he pulled away fully.
John's seemed happy with her response, "I see, so it's both challenging and the fact that you can help people feel better? You really are a good person." He could more than relate to how she felt. For him, it was the rush of the discovery, the dreaming about how it could make the world a better place, envisioning a future where there was a limitless supply and knowing that he helped create it.
"I used to go crazy in my college days." He noted, chuckling, he was a little more comfortable with sharing more of his past, now that they were opening up. "I took every course I could because it felt like so many things bored me, but that was probably because I was young and I couldn't control... well, couldn't control my mental faculty that well.
So what I did, was I took almost every major I could possible and finished as many as I could. I'm a pretty smart guy, so my head needed to be satisfied, I had to know everything there was to know about everything. And I think I had a little bit of an inferiority complex too-- when my parents died they left me a large fortune and a great set of assets, which I... in my infinite wisdom, decided to liquidate and sell everything to charity. Just because I could." He gently bit his index finger of his free hand, memories which truly embarrassed him, this was one of them.
"But it paid off, all that work and training. I discovered something that not even Albert Einstein, Plato, Nikola Tesla, Frank Ramsey or Galileo could ever imagine. And for a time, I used to to gain a lot of success in a lot of different fields. Had I completed my actual work, I think this world would be a better place than it is right now. I designed something that would create limitless energy, can you imagine?" He smiled wistfully at her, "But, someone doesn't want me to. And maybe they're right, maybe limitless energy will just destroy all of humanity at some point. But I have to know."
He couldn't get ten minutes into a simple date without getting into some heavy stuff. But again, he owed as much, considering how little Evelyn knew about him. As they continued to walk, Azrael noticed something. "Oh! Hey, let's get some cotton candy." He said, holding her by the hand to go grab some. "Two, please." He stated to the vendor. "Yes sir, one for the gentleman and one for the pretty lady." Remarked the semi-aging man whirring the machine. "Enjoy kids."
John passed a cone to his date. "You know what the best part about cotton candy is? You get to eat the sticky parts from the other person's face." He said, chuckling. "Not that napkins wouldn't help, but there's less to do on the ferris wheel ride if that's the case."

He was more forward physically than most people she'd been with. It briefly worried her still, her own personal paranoia that he just might want something from her other than a conversation and time spent with one another, but she couldn't judge him that harshly yet. She was still waiting it out to see for herself. He wanted to go out with her again, that spoke against her worries. She smiled shyly as he called her a good person, though she didn't think she was much more good than any other average civilian. "I'm no hero, but I like the position I'm in." Evelyn admitted, before listening to him and what he had to say about his college years. She was interested in his backstory, and it was nice to know that he was about as fond of learning as she was. Chuckling at his confidence, though surprised by his words, she wasn't sure if she believed him. "How many majors?" How long would that have taken him to accomplish? Was his power, if he did have one, superhuman intelligence? It was killing her not to ask, but she bit her tongue. Her question seemed completely irrelevant however, as he mentioned his parents having passed away. "I'm sorry to hear that, about your parents." Though the fortune he claimed to inherit wouldn't have filled the gap that losing ones parents would create, it at least kept him from starving she hoped. So what was he doing here in Kingsport? "Limitless energy." She repeated, in awe. Mixed with confusion and surprise, it was hard to believe such a thing could ever exist but she was quite curious. She couldn't imagine it, but the idea was impressive. Frowning to herself whilst in her own set of thoughts, she hadn't realized she was spacing out and she heard something about cotton candy. He was right, she knew very little about him, but all of this was going to take a bit to sink in. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had cotton candy. Accepting the cone from him her eyes lifted to John's, scoffing before nudging his arm with her shoulder for saying something so ridiculous even if he was serious. "Oh stop. To be honest I can't remember the last time I've had cotton candy. Thank you." She grinned, and stepped on her toes to kiss him on the cheek. Azrael

"Hmm, quite a few," He replied, understating it slightly. "I started when I was about twelve and-- it sounds like I'm bragging doesn't it?" He noted, he could understand the suspension of disbelief at the level of studying he was talking about. "I started at twelve, and studied until I was eighteen, and I completed two majors and its doctorate each year. I was impatient and headstrong."
He stopped for a moment, as she took note of his parents. "Oh, that doesn't bother me that much anymore. I was never close to my father, my mother I missed for quite a while. I still miss her full english breakfast sometimes. But I was too young to feel anything when they went away."
Handing Evelyn her cotton candy, he felt a light nudge edge against arm. He stuck his tongue out in response, "You are most welcome, my dear." He felt her lips against is cheek, and he couldn't help but feel a slight churn in his heart, smiling inwardly. "Whew... did it get a few degrees hotter suddenly?" He returned it, kissing her hair, before gently scooching her towards him by holding her shoulder.
He gently unstrung the pieces of flossed sugar into his mouth. As expected, the floss was unavoidably a sticky mess. "What about you Ev? Your parents, are they happy with the way you are now? I imagine they're worried sick about the fact that you're always treating people in danger."

What she called impatient and headstrong, Evelyn saw it as miraculous and incredible. If he didn't have super human intelligence, what did that make her? She had scored honors every year, finished top of her class, ended her schooling far sooner than expected but she hadn't been anywhere close to what John described of his college years. Admittedly, it made her feel slightly inadequate, and that wasn't something she often felt when faced with her education.
His remark about his parents didn't make her feel any less sympathetic, sure he might have not been close to them but that was perhaps more upsetting than them passing away. She was quite close to her parents, and even though she lived quite far from them now it didn't stop either from having close communication whenever she was available.
She accepted her sweet treat, pulling pieces of it apart and grinning as he stuck his tongue out at her. His reaction to her affection amusing. He had a sense of humor, one that she felt she often lacked, but she liked it on him. It got her to relax, appreciate the moment.
Leaning against him slightly as he ebbed her closer with his arm, she sighed through her nose while the sugary cotton candy melted on her tongue. "Worried no doubt, but they are very supportive. I don't think I would have gotten this far without having their support honestly. We're fairly close. I keep in touch with them often. They don't live in Kingsport so, it's a little hard with the distance. Of course, that prevents them from knowing the real 'dangers' of my job." Enunciating the word as if it was truly scary, Evelyn wasn't afraid like she probably should be about said dangers. She just simply couldn't live her life worrying about everything, or she wouldn't live.

"Sounds like your job isn't as eventful as most people imagine it to be." He spoke, having listened to her words. He had expected there to be some sort of dangerous secretive information she was privy to in her information, he supposed that was why she had to be tight lipped about her actual work. Still, it concerned him exactly how much her work has cost her in her actual life, if it weren't for the fact that he had asked her out, she would not have had come here. "Must be nice, to have someone worry over you like that. Unconditionally." He said, looking towards her. "A lot of people I know don't have that luxury. And they don't know it until it's gone forever, like... a bedrock that's just removed under you and your whole world shakes from then onwards."
The familiar sound of screams then broke through the crowd, as the pair of them walked into the rides section of the theme park. How this fairgrounds managed to set up a ninety meter turbo-drop called "The Abyss" in less than a month, Azrael would never know... actually, he could. But he didn't several seconds ago. "Let's go for that amusement ride." He pointed, towards the massive rising drop. Lining up behind the brave few who were daring enough to do so on a full stomach, Azrael stood behind Evelyn and gave her shoulders a squeeze.

There was always the potential of something going wrong, and she was ever prepared for anything, but most days things just went smoothly. "There's always risks, but it's nothing I can't handle." Evelyn smiled, her confidence in the matter exuding from her before she tilted her head to peek at him. She hoped that by speaking of her parents it didn't stir bad memories out of him. He said he didn't feel as much for the loss of his but she didn't know for certain. "I don't take them for granted. They're my parents, I love them." The honest truth there, but she knew what he meant. There were times when she wished they stopped asking how she was, but it was just a sign that they cared, and she didn't go very long before reminding herself of that fact. Her eyes turned to the strangers around them as she heard the screams coming from the rides as they entered. Evelyn wasn't much for thrill rides, things that would scare you on purpose. Since she could barely remember the last time she'd gone to something like this, she wasn't sure if she'd ever been on one of the rides before. Perhaps when she was little, back at home. So as he pointed to the most awful ride she could have thought of to try Evelyn raised a brow, looked at him with genuine apprehension and tensed so slightly as he grabbed her shoulders. "Are you sure?"She eyes the contraption, watching as it lifted and dropped the group seated. "I don't know..It doesn't look very pleasant." She sort of had a thing about heights, but she wasn't going to tell him that. Azrael

He paused for a moment, looking at Evelyn as she asked him about the ride. She was afraid of the ride, that was apparent, but it seemed there was something else about her that was a little more distressing. "Alright," He said, as she stated her obvious insecurities out loud. "We don't have to do this, but, I'd like to talk to you for a moment..." Gently leading her out of the line, Azrael led the both of them to a more remote place in the fairgrounds.
He looked into her eyes, his only expression was unreadable. "Evelyn, listen." He began, "I've been getting this feeling that you've been hiding something from me, or holding something personally against me that either I don't know about, or you feel maybe that I'm either being forceful or nervous or some shit like that. But you've been distant with me since our last date. I don't know what's going on with you, maybe you've had a bad day, or maybe a stressful week. maybe you're not actually enjoying this at all.
Tell me if you are. Because I am not the world's best psychologist, nor am I the world's greatest dater. But I'm doing my best to make it fun for both of us. And if that's not enough, then tell me." Perhaps that was the issue, he was trying to make it fun for the both of them. And it was backfiring on his sense of intuition. But it was there, something that wasn't prior to this date.

She was relieved when he seemed to give in to her plea. It made her feel a bit of a spoil sport, but it wasn't her prerogative to attend fairs like this in general. She supported community events, genuinely cared for her community, but socializing outside of work was difficult for the woman. Regardless she'd been enjoying her time with John. He was sweet to take her to a place like this, talk about things that she was curious about. This was why it surprised her when he asked to talk.
"Sure," Evelyn had muttered, reverted her eyes from the ride to the man beside her as she turned and he guided them away from the dense crowds of civilians walking about with their unhealthy food and happy faces. She looked up at her date, as he looked down at her, though her expression was more confused than unreadable as his was.
He asked her to listen so she did, tilting her head so slightly as he went on. She didn't entirely understand where he was coming from, why he thought she was hiding things from him. She didn't think her apprehension involving heights was the issue, and if it was it seemed a little unnecessary to pull her aside for it. Nevertheless she felt a bit bad for making him believe that she wasn't enjoying herself, in whatever way she must have communicated that to him though unintentionally.
She frowned slightly, shook her head in disagreement first. "I don't understand what you mean?" Was he trying to end their date this early already? Did she say something offhanded and hadn't even realized?..."I'm sorry, that you think I'm not enjoying myself. I don't know what I did to make you feel that way." He was right, he wasn't a psychologist, but even so she didn't know what was going through his mind either. She paused, thinking of something more to say, thinking back to their previous conversations.
"If it's about your past, your work, you don't have to push yourself to talk about it. I like hearing about your school, your family." The normal, trivial stories that she was sure he had, those interested her too, but she didn't want for him to think he had to tell her while he wasn't ready. Evelyn grinned a bit reluctantly, lifting a hand to tuck strands of her hair behind her right ear. "I guess I'm just not the most fun date to ever have."

Azrael bit down hard on his finger, closing his eyes for a moment and simply stood there, her answer made it really clear to him now. And he had to silently berate himself for being an idiot, it wasn't that she wasn't enjoying herself, it was just that he was inexperienced and on edge. "Sorry, my head isn't in the right place right now." In retrospect, he shouldn't have placed a date so early, or in fact, have done it so soon to a major event, he was on edge, Evelyn wasn't ready for a second date considering her time table, and his head was crazy.
"It's not your fault, I'm just going nuts because I've never..." He paused for a moment, "I don't think I've ever met someone who wasn't falling head over heels for me." He said, admittedly, he had not felt the refrain, the level of apprehension or nervousness around his character before, but that was probably because he had taken all those for granted with his past experiences, and now reality was hitting him in the face that he was just being spoiled.
"I'm going crazy Ev, I' m like a schoolboy on his first date with his crush." He chuckled, grimacing slightly. "Honestly, outside of all this stuff, I just want to spend time with you. And I just want you to be happy with me, so I guess I'm overly paranoid that you're not... much like anyone I've dated in the past." He rubbed a hand behind his back, cutting of eye contact in slight embarrassment.
"I'd rather we just have dinner at a restaurant, get a drink afterwards, then I'll drive you back home. How does that sound?"
