the phone is clumsy in her hands for a moment. its dark outside, and she struggles against the bright light of the screen versus the dark interior of her apartment, but she manages to get the right number into the message and send it.
hey. are you up.

She's not sleeping, actually, but lying in a kind of trance in bed, staring at the ceiling and wading through memories, so the sharp, insistent jolt of the text message alert startles her. Thalia is silent and still in the blue dark for a moment, heart pounding rapidfire in her chest, and wonders who is texting her so late. It's not an official Initiate message--that would come through her communicator--and for one dreadful moment she wonders. But then she stops wondering. That's as over as it's ever going to be.
(It will never be over.)
Thalia fumbles for the phone and squints against the harsh glare of the screen. Her mind takes a moment to process the message, lagging behind as she reads it without understanding: hey. are you up. Her eyes skip over the name and then snag on it like lace on wire. Very carefully, she types up a response.
yeah.
She sends it without anything else. She wants to ask late nite? or how are you? but she doesn't know what will set Marisa off, what will make her put the phone down and stop answering, and she hates herself a little for being afraid of that.
couldn't sleep.

her eyes were closed when the texts come in, a light vibration against her palm. with muscle memory, she flicks the text open before she actually opens up her eyes, and she reads whats written on faith before she actually sees it.
its not a refusal to communicate. thats already more than she feels she deserves, and a minute passes before her fingers get to work.
how are yo deleted. i miss yo deleted.
same. they keep you busy?

Her hands don't shake, but she feels a curious sort of nervousness settling into the pit of her stomach. Like walking a tight-rope. Only that's a bad analogy because if she fell off the tight-rope she could just fly herself to safety. Falling has no fear for her. But you're not supposed to be afraid of falling, anyway--you're supposed to be afraid of hitting the ground.
She's distracting herself from the matter at hand. She knows that. She stares at the cursor blinking on the screen for a minute, trying to desperately think of something interesting. She can't.
the killer alligator robots kinda ruined my sleep schedule. idk if u saw them on the news.
Thalia sends it without thinking, and then bites her lip and starts overthinking. Was that a bad move? Reminding Marisa of what she does? But she'd--she'd asked. She already had it in her mind, maybe. Fuck.
idk aside from that life is boring. you?

she muses herself with small curious hums as she recalls the earlier issue with today. she did see them, in fact, because they took down one of the bars she used to frequent.
there will be other bars. other places to drink.
yeah i saw the news. saw clips of you. seemed hectic.
pauses. does she want to leave that before she sends it? she hesitates, hits send anyways after adding onto it. then she threw the phone onto the couch for a moment to get up and get a drink.
it was nice to see you

felt hectic, haha.
Deflection. She fires the message off without thinking about the second part. After a moment, she feels like shit and pulls open her messenger app again.
it would have been nice to see you.

by the time she has doused her face in cold water and then gotten a cup full for consumption, she's got two message notifications on her lock screen. the first message is just a message, just that.
the second is something. marisa feels that twisting feeling of guilt, somewhere, and regrets sending the messages in the first place. this is, admittedly, scary - a part of her is whispering at her, dont do this to thalia, dont drag her down with you but its not an urging strong enough to stave off needs.
maybe when you arent dealing with hectic gators?

Ugh. Thalia hates herself with a sickening totality and wishes she were funny, or charming, or witty, or anything.

It was a miracle of science, or perhaps proof of the divine, that Thalia had ever gotten laid.

it is only after she reads the reply that she realizes her original message sent and she is frozen for a moment, heart caught in a single beat, and breathes out. she gets up, opens the fridge, and then opens the wine cooler in her hand. with the bottle pressed to her lips, she replies with one hand.
please.

otw. Thalia messages it without fanfare. Maybe it's a promise; maybe it's a threat. She doesn't know. She stops worrying about it though and goes to find clothes that aren't a worn pair of plaid boxers and a tank top.
