Dunwich Park is a lovely place in summer. The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. The people who are scattered about the grass on checkered picnic blankets are white and affluent. It's a wonderful picture of certain people's American Dream. Thalia is here for something that's like a PR event had sex with an actual mission. Apparently there have been numerous incidents in Dunwich Park lately, ranging from the benign, if troublesome--graffiti'd slogans in support of LGBT equality--to ones that actually require her--muggings, and an attempted assault a few nights ago--so she's here to be the public face of safety while also providing entertainment for the denizens of the park.
She's juggling bowling balls, to that end. It's surprisingly difficult; not because of the weight, but because she's bad at juggling. There's an earpiece tucked discretely behind her hair (she has a lot of hair) and she smiles at the growing crowd around her while whispering to her partner, who is doing the exciting work of looking for trouble incognito while she draws attention.
"Find anything?"

Cryo couldn’t hold back an incoming yawn as he leisurely strolled around Dunwich Park. His first actual field mission and they had him looking for pickpockets and the run of the mill asshole.
This wasn’t ideal. Not to mention he had a babysitter. Well at least it was a gorgeous lady, he could appreciate that.
He shuffled in his sweater, a bit out of place on a bright sunny day like this but it had a purpose. Cryo felt the more covered up his body was the less likely it was for his proximity to be cold. It was probably pointless and didn’t work as well as he thought but it made sense in his head.
“Nothing,” He sighed bored out of his mind, watching children running around and couples being lovely dovey was not what he imagined being a ‘hero’ meant. “What exactly are we even suppose to be doing? Do you really expect someone to be so stupid as to try something in the middle of the day, there’s people everywhere.”

"I don't underestimate anyone's stupidity," Thalia mutters darkly while smiling at a five-year old fan. The kid sticks his tongue out at her. Okay, maybe not a fan. Thalia resists the urge to stick her tongue out back at him, mostly because there's a 22 year age gap between them, but also partially because there are cameras. "Someone's bound to see us and take that as a challenge, especially with all the activity that's been around here lately. Criminals are drawn to heroes like--"
Whatever terrible, cliche simile she's about to end the sentence with is drowned out by the muffled woomph of an explosion. She drops a bowling ball on her foot and doesn't even notice.
"I told you!"

Cryo zoned out, getting a feeling that his superior was about to give some cliche speech about the dangers heroes can pose to society and how we have a responsibility and yada yada yada.
Whoomph!
Before she could go into anymore detail a loud explosion shook the park. Mothers quickly grabbed their children, and Cryo snapped into action. Looks like he was spared from her preaching, for now.
"I told you!" He scoffed. Cryo was just happy things were getting interesting.
“Yeah, yeah, meet you there!” The explosion was nearby, he swiftly made his way towards the blooming smoke cloud without much regard to protocol.

Thalia lags behind her partner somewhat, mostly because she's herding all the bystanders away from the explosion, even though most of them have whipped out their smartphones and are snapping away.
"Get out of here!" she orders them firmly, only half-expecting to be obeyed--celebrity power and superhero status is not what it used to be, now that everyone's had eight years to acclimate and develop a healthy disdain for what is, in the end, just another figure of authority--and then takes to the sky to land in front of the smoke cloud from the explosion.
She's not really any better than Cryo about following safety procedures. In her mind, she had a perfectly good excuse, although somehow other people's excuses were never good enough for her. Weird, that one.

Cryo made it on scene before Valkyrie, without even breaking a sweat. All that endurance training seemed to come in handy.
A few yards away stood a lone man among the smoke and dust, a destroyed food truck lay not far from him obviously the source of the explosion. Cryo smirked and with an arrogant ‘hmph’ decided to act alone, figuring chance was in his favor here.
“Freeze!” Crouching down he placed both palms on the ground and a crisp wave of ice flowed towards the man as Cryo tried to stop him in his tracks.

She misses the terrible pun, but doesn't miss the man jumping over the wave of ice that surges toward him. He jumps like gravity doesn't apply to him, which is certainly possible in this day and age, but he lands rather heavily. Maybe he's just an ordinary person who had a bomb. That wouldn't be pleasant, exactly, but it would be a surprise. It's easier to apprehend someone who only has guns and willpower than it is to apprehend someone who can turn their appendages into renewable explosive devices.
She fought someone like that once. Shit sucked.
Still, the procedures have to be followed. (Except for the security procedures. Those don't count.)
"This is official Initiative business," Thalia announces, her voice loud and clear. "Stand down and you won't be hurt."

Seeing his target easily avoid his attack made Cryo think this guy wasn’t just some run of the mill anarchist. With an annoyed ‘che’ Cryo didn’t waste time and geared for a projectile attack, a frosty mist radiating from his hands.
However, before he could even make his move the target had a surprise in store for the Initiative dogs as the man’s arms turned in explosives. Before Cryo could finish muttering “what the hell” a large bang rang through the air and Cryo barely had time to cover his arms in a thick layers of ice to shield his face.
Cryo couldn’t see anything through the smokescreen of dust and dirt. But through the debris a shadow appeared before him, the target! The man geared up another batch of explosives in his hands aimed right towards Cryo’s face.
The teen in a panic had no idea what to do. It was his first field job, he’d never had to react like this before, this was life and death.

The explosion doesn't hurt, but unfortunately none of her mutations allow her to see through the haze of debris that's settled over the area. Thalia squints like a normal person, trying to make out both her partner and her target through the dusty veil.
"Kid?" she says, hoping the earpiece can pick it up--it's crackling a bit in a worrisome manner--just as the outline of movement catches her attention. The silhouette's arms shine red, even through the grit clogging her vision, and Thalia throws herself at it as it steps forward again.
t4fsUhHK < 50 she successfully absorbs most of the explosion
The man detonates his arms (!!) on impact, but she twists herself around him like a snake. This close, the explosion makes her ears ring, but when she grabs his wrists she's pretty sure he's not going anywhere. Unless he has super strength. But c'mon even these days not everyone has it.
< 50 he has super strength
He rips one arm out of her grip and socks her in the jaw. Thalia doesn't really feel it, but the force rocks her backwards anyway.
