going through puberty is never fun. for aidan king, it was basically hell.

the only son of an aggressively normal, if somewhat affluent english family, aidan was in at private boarding school when it happened - just beginning second year, halfway through recovering from a broken leg sustained through football. and really, at first you can ascribe it to being on pain meds - reduced appetite, tiredness. but then, the fever. the complete stop to his eating. something was wrong. he was called back from school, doted on at home, as he got sicker and sicker.

cue the static shocks. sitting in a bath and seeing the water start to boil. breaking things with the lightest of touches. and then it clicked, and clicked hard.

armed with the knowledge and a few private tutoring lessons from a mutant friend of his mother's, aidan's recovery was rapid and his resolve to fully master his ability was extremely high. the expensive education and his natural intelligence were enough to give him pick of any university, any subject: with kingsport's high density of superpowered inhabitants, it was a massively attractive destination: he ended up going to miskatonic to study criminal justice, with a view to studying law afterwards.

of course, aidan is a quietly idealistic person, and seeing the state of the city - arkham, the profusion of villains, the forced registration of people trying to protect the place, and it got him angry. angry angry. dropping out halfway through his junior year at miskatonic, he struck out on his own - no money from his parents, a menial job at a hardware store, a tiny little studio apartment in arkham with a closet full of extensively sourced military surplus gear. as far as he's concerned, aidan king's comfort doesn't matter.

it just matters that the sovereign can make things better.

while broadly termed 'energy conversion', aidan's powers have three distinct branches all working in tandem to make him capable of using them effectively. the first branch is absorption, which basically means he is capable of selectively converting most forms of energy he encounters into chemical and potential energy within his own body. the list is broad - electromagnetic, kinetic, heat, you name it and the sovereign is probably capable of no-selling it to an extent. that part is important, 'to an extent', because he isn't without unlimited storage capablities and his power is very much 'always on until consciously turned off', but certainly in a fight there are only a few things that bypass his defences entirely - mystical energies particularly, given their metaphysical nature.



so how does aidan keep from exploding on a regular basis? the second branch of his abilities, of course, projection and conversion of the energy stored within his body. he can take a few routes for this - passively, his body temperature is a few degrees higher than most, and he does tend to mess with electromagnetic communication within a few feet if he's 'running hot'. actively he has a few comfortable methods of discharging large quantities at once, and these usually take the form of discharging electrical arcs or huge kinetic force into an object with a touch. larger quantities can project the arcs at a distance, or send objects flying at ballistic speeds.



and last, but not least, the upsides of the storage of all that potential. while aidan's primary strength is his ability to convert incoming energy attacks either way on the fly, the energy stored in his body has other upsides for combat: hand-to-hand attacks are delivered with crushing force, his ability to withstand blows hugely cushioned by passive venting of opposite force, near-tirelessness thanks to diversion of glucose to his muscles. he's not invincible, not by a long shot, but he's definitely tough.
