His family was full of them after all, psychics primarily, but he however was one of the rare few without these powers. So, that's what led him to be a leading researcher in the field of metahuman physiology research. However, it was hard to get materials for this research - especially because the only powered beings he knew of at the time was his only family. He couldn't experiment on and examine his own family members though, could he? [break][break] Unfortunately, that's where Jerry came into the picture. With his parents no where to be found, and his caretaker / grandfather - Jared's father - passing away from old age, Jerry would be brought into his Uncle Jared's home at the impressionable age of eight. Which is when it all began. At first Jared used him for simple tests, trying to figure out what kind of abilities Jerry possessed. It would turn out that, despite being something of a heir for the small remnants of the Burton family, Jerry had fairly weak psychic abilities. Maybe he could make something on a table twitch, or send a fragment of a word through his thoughts to Jared, but that was it. Practice didn't get him much further to Jared's frustration. He needed to see a psychic properly develop, he wanted to understand the powers Jerry had. [break][break] So after a couple years of dead ends and little progress, Jared started to get very desperate in his efforts to witness Jerry's powers advancing further. Subjecting the ten-year-old to various drugs, stimulants, and other things to try and get his mind to function on higher levels; all these things were done with no hesitation by Jared. It seemed to help at first, but the withdrawals and after effects proved less favorable. Jerry would often get sick, or break down in various ways as a result of the abuse he endured. The practices of drugs, stimulants, and harsh testing began to cause a decline over time in Jerry's abilities, unfortunately. [break][break] Seeing Jerry reach an all time low in abilities, Jared came to the realization that his nephew was no longer the ideal developing psychic subject he needed. The development project ended at that point, and he instead move on to something else. If Jerry's powers as they were could not develop further, could he possibly host new powers? Through various black markets and dark deals, Jared got his hands on the fresh corpses of many other psychics for this project. If Jerry's brain wasn't capable of going further with it's current set up, then Jared decided he'd make some changes. His project changed from witnessing the development of psychic abilities to seeing if it was possible to implant powers within people they were not originally for. [break][break] Hours, days, weeks of labor went into these projects. Some brain matter matched up with Jerry's brain better than others, but when the new organic material added to Jerry was rejected by Jerry's system, the young Burton was on the verge of death many times. Trials and surgeries went on for years, Jerry's head became covered in scars from the numerous times it was cracked open. It seemed that Jared's experiments were a success for the most part over time though. Jerry's natural abilities (empathy, telepathy, and telekinesis) didn't develop much further but he got particularly attached to the developed illusionist abilities donated to him. He got really good at those so Jared decided to leave the donated brain material within Jerry's skull. [break][break] It was exciting to see the developments his research was taking, which led him to continue of course. However, the last donation to Jerry's mind would end with quite the bang. Jared was under the impression the source material was just a skilled medium, but what had not been told to him was the fact the psychic was proficient in dealing with things far older than ghosts and demons. When it came time for Jerry to use the new additions to his power set, everything quickly went out of control. He doesn't remember much of the experience - as traumatic as it was - but he remembers the feeling of something clawing it's way into him. The feeling of his skin crawling as something took hold inside of him. He wasn't sure what it was, but it terrified him. It made him want to rip himself apart to just get it out of him, and Jerry quickly broke down at that point. Cutting himself up, ramming his head against walls, scratching his skin until he bled, and seemingly trying to kill himself until Jared knocked him out Jared attempted to remove the added material to Jerry's brain that allowed him to summon whatever it was that was now part of his being. [break][break] Unfortunately, when Jared attempted to do so, whatever was inside of Jerry did not take so kindly to it's new vessel being potentially taken from him. Jerry has no idea what it/he did to Jared, but he remembers waking up to the sight of his uncle's arm in a cast and it looking like Jared had certainly lost a brutal fight. Jerry was left chained down in the lab for several days after that as Jared formulated what to do now that his current sample - Jerry - would no longer be able to be used for trials and experiments. [break][break] It didn't take long for him to decide his next course of action. Tricking Jerry into staying loyal to him under the guise that no one else would accept Jerry now that he was a monster, Jared used his nephew as something of an errand boy. Bringing in other psychics and young super powered youths, Jerry became warped further and further by his uncle's doing and that of the voice inside of his head. As time went by, Jared's experiments grew more and more elaborate, and it steadily became apparent to Jerry just what his uncle was attempted to do. [break][break] Jared's goal quickly reached levels beyond those of the super strong muscle headed soldier projects, but become that of reaching a true super powered form. Jared wanted to develop a method to give himself powers - primarily psychic abilities - and more. As the years went by of him testing theories and more, the Initiative quickly came to Jared's attention as well. Jared's projects were reaching their end and he was getting prepared to complete the last experiment - giving himself powers. That's where Jerry comes in for one last errand. [break][break] Break into the Initiative, grab as much data as he could on all the supers, bring it back to Jared and capture those with the powers Jared desired. Of course, it's not going to be easy. Jerry can naturally project his thoughts into the minds of others. He can maintain a connection with a few people at a time in close range, but is far better at simple connecting with the mind of a single person for a period of time. Once a connection is established with at least one person, he's able to talk with them through this mental connection for hours regardless of where they go. However, once he makes a connection with someone else, the previous connection will be disabled and he'll have to wait until he encounters that person again to reset it. [attr="class","subcat"]Empathy NATURAL. The weakest of his abilities, Jerry doesn't really like this one much - if at all. The best it does is let him better understand the emotions of those around him and he'd like to leave it at that. When dealing with highly emotional people though, unfortunately their emotions can impact him to a degree. The range is short, needing to certainly either be connected telepathically or at least in close quarters with another person to understand their feelings beyond that of the normal human range. Stronger emotions can be felt from further distances though. [attr="class","subcat"]Telekinesis NATURAL. The strongest of Jerry's natural skills. He's capable of moving large and heavy objects short distances with his mind with ease at best. Although, things around the size and weight of a fridge are his limit. He won't be throwing cars or buses any time soon. [attr="class","subcat"]Illusion Manipulation ARTIFICIAL. Jerry can paint scenes so realistic and genuine that even some of the sharpest minds will fall for his tricks. He's mastered the illusionist craft to the point he can trick minds into being so sure the reality they see is real. So real in fact if they're injured in the illusion, the injury has a high chance of actually appearing on the affected person's body. He can do simple things like making himself appear as someone else, or extravagant Disney movie worthy displays for sudden musical numbers. Unlike most users, Jerry's illusions do not effect just sight, but hearing, smell, taste, etc. He naturally radiates waves of energy that causes his illusions to manifest so naturally without people even being aware they're effected by them. He tends to stick to small scale illusions most of the time so to throw off people's aim or make them stumble over things that aren't there. Trickery is Jerry's strong suit and he uses it well. [attr="class","subcat"]Medium ARTIFICIAL. He sees dead people, basically. He can talk to them, interact with them as if they're regular people and they can do the same with him. He can't control the dead though, just... Interact with them. Unfortunately, this invites demons and malevolent spirits to him, but they keep their distance when they realize what's inside of him. [attr="class","subcat"]Unholy Vessel Taking residence within Jerry is an ancient malevolent force with a mind of it's own. For the most part it stays quiet, watching, waiting, but when something catches it's interest, it can be quite insistent and controlling of Jerry's person. Using Jerry as it's host, it in turn allows Jerry access to it's abilities, but only when it finds Jerry's cause interesting enough to warrant the borrowing of it's abilities. This is a rather rare occurrence, thankfully. For the most part, the only thing the abomination actively does for Jerry is heal him as Jerry is his host and having a broken host is not helpful. Healing is a slow agonizing process Jerry doesn't like relying on. It just sort of happens regardless of his whims, though. [break][break] When the abomination within Jerry awakens, it radiates an unnatural presence that will certainly unsettle anyone near Jerry. He radiates an air that causes those around him to become nervous, scared even. Things become tense and paranoia crawls up people's spines, making them shutter. The presence of this abomination has caused storms to start in the past - almost anything that radiates light immediately dims or just flat out shuts off. Powers can temporarily be unstable when exposed to this creature's presence, making some powers either go out of control or just not work. If something bad has a chance of happening when the abomination is taking control of Jerry, the chances of the bad things happening are significantly increased. It varies on how much the abomination's corrupted nature seeps out of Jerry. The range of the abomination's powers are short though, only allowing him to effect only those within it's domain - the same room, building, lot of land, etc. It cannot effect entire cities or worlds for sure, as it's host limits it's out reach. [break][break] In giving Jerry's it's strength, Jerry is for a time a far tougher and more powerful person. Seemingly gaining super human strength, and short distanced teleportation, he can be tricky to deal with. He can take more hits - even gun shots don't make him flinch despite the damage they cause him. He heals faster, but the patches that heal take on black skin that looks inhuman as the parasitic abomination tries to take over it's host more and more. Despite the faster healing factor, though, Jerry is by all means mortal, so any instantly fatal wounds can very easily kill him. However, what that means for the ancient one he's got inside of him is yet to be determined. |
