On a good day, he is untalkative and apathetic, minding his own business and preferring if others did, similarly. On a bad day... he is prone to violent fits of anger, ticked off remarkably easy by the smallest thing. While he has accumulated a little discipline with his age, that doesn't stop him from getting into fistfights and shouting matches--- the difference is that he doesn't use his powers in them now unless the brawl gets actually serious. [break][break] Marcus dislikes the world. He has a very cynical outlook, often expecting the worst of people--- compassion actually has him on his guard, suspicious. He believes everyone is looking out for themselves, and usually has their own agenda, often expecting them to stab him in the back. Heroes merely want fame or money or the rush--- villains are at least more truthful about what they want. He dislikes manipulation and lies, deceit and diplomacy; if someone is going to come into conflict with him, he would prefer it face to face, and with blows. [break][break] Still, he is not all negativity, and there are indeed ways to gain his trust--- one mostly needs to be straightforward and to be consistent. There is room in his worldview for exceptions in the world, after all--- people who actually care, one way or the other; people who have proven themselves to be true. For these people he can be intensely loyal, ready to kill or be killed for their sakes. [break][break] All in all, Marcus is distrustful and tempestuous, but anyone who gains his trust he will fight for, with all his might. [attr="class","subcat"]biographical details Marcus' early childhood was uneventful; in fact, no one could have probably predicted him becoming the person he was like now. His parents were not particularly rich, but they made enough for a stable living, and to send him to school, even though they lived in Kingsport. [break][break] That all changed when, while he was in the midst of his studies in college, the aliens attacked. While he and his family survived, his father's business became bankrupt from the rampant destruction. They were forced to move to Arkham for cheaper housing, even knowing its unpleasant state. Marcus had to quit his studies and work, as well. His behavior began to degenerate, as well. [break][break] As luck would have it, he was employed by a villain, although he didn't know it at first. He was only charged with manual labor in a warehouse in Arkham--- little did he know that the crates he was delivering and moving were to be parts of an experiment--- an experiment by a megalomaniac to become faster than anyone else. And, as luck would have it, yet again, the experiment ended in one big explosion... leaving one survivor--- Marcus himself. [break][break] After recovering from the aftermath of that accident, Marcus learned that he had... powers. He thought of never using them, since he disliked the Initiative--- they might have saved Kingsport, but not his family--- and he was too busy with his life to worry about saving others as a vigilante. However, his temper grew progressively worse as he failed to gain employment, perhaps exacerbated by the burning nature of his newly-gained abilities--- leading to him becoming a mercenary in Arkham--- the man who broke buildings with a fiery crash. [break][break] Ultimately, the threat he posed became too great--- and he had expanded to wreaking havoc past Arkham, too--- that the Initiative sent one of theirs to bring him in--- a man named Aramaeus, a magician. He fought fiercely against his enchantments, but it eventually culminated in his loss, and his preferred arm, his left arm, being severed. He was then taken in. [break][break] As he was imprisoned, Aramaeus constantly talked with him, attempting to make him see how he could use his abilities for the betterment of others. The man even offered him a prosthetic that allowed him to control his powers better. While it was uncertain how much Aramaeus was successful in rehabilitating him, one thing was certain: Aramaeus, after many meetings, earned his respect and his loyalty. He became an Initiative hero, albeit a very destructive and apathetic one. [break][break] That was... until he learned that Aramaeus was betrayed by the Initiative. After contacting certain underground contacts to ensure the Initiative would not have their hands on his family, he set out to rejoin him. The man was a rare person who believed in justice... and if he was not with the Initiative, then... the Initiative must not have justice, as well. [attr="class","subcat"]trivia The Colt Paterson was the first commercial repeating firearm employing a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single, stationary barrel. Its design was patented by Samuel Colt on February 25, 1836. These are where Marcus gets his surname and birthday. While other individuals may have access to similar forces, his particular version works through heat, and is particularly volatile--- while he accesses it he cannot be manipulated by, say, vector manipulators or the like; he can only be stopped by meeting him with a similar force. It is also very powerful, managing to accelerate faster than most speedsters, although the difference is mostly observable only by other speedsters. [break][break] On the other hand, his control of the very force is slightly lacking; once he starts it, he has difficulty stopping it until he slams onto something (hopefully an opponent), and only very little changes to direction can be made. Of course, blows using the momentum of his superspeed have commensurate force, and are often accompanied with explosions and flames due to friction with the air, and the very nature of the force that accelerates him. As such, using his powers often generates a lot of collateral. [attr="class","subcat"]Enhanced Durability and Healing His body has, of course, adapted to the rigors that the speedforce puts him through; he can take a lot of physical damage, and he has great resistance to fire and heat-based attacks as well, and other energy-based ones to a lesser extent. He also heals quickly as a result of his connection to the otherworldly force, and has a superhuman stamina. However, his metabolism is also accelerated, requiring him to consume large amounts of calories after every time he uses his powers. [attr="class","subcat"]Speedforce Pyrokinesis Over time, he has learned to use the force powering him to, instead of making him fast, create flames that shoot with the same speed as his rushes. Much like his charges, they are explosive and go on a straight line. Because of their source, these blasts of fire are capable of damaging opponents usually resistant or even immune to flames. He cannot control other flames beyond his own. [attr="class","subcat"]Magitech Prosthetic Arm - 'Firearm' A prosthetic given to him by the Dread Knight, replacing his lost left arm, and his namesake. Using various magic circuits in the arm, Marcus gains the ability to segment his charges, essentially allowing him to use his superspeed and/or fire blasts in succession, rather than all in one go. This partially solves his problem with manuevering; with this he can use the remaining partitioned charges to force himself to change direction, even allowing him to make hit-and-run attacks. Currently he can partition his speedforce into six parts. [break][break] The arm is also really durable, to withstand the heat and force he generates. It also has really sharp retractable claws on its fingertips. [attr="class","subcat"]Magitech Blade - 'Bayonet' A large magitech blade as durable as his prosthetic arm, made to withstand the heat and force he generates. He uses it mostly when he wants to wreck a larger area, or as an emergency weapon when he can't use his superspeed, although he's not much of a swordsman and mostly relies on smashing it on his opponents. [attr="class","subcat"]Brawling He might not be officially trained in a martial art, but he knows how to take a punch and throw one in return, and has a few dirty tricks, too. |
