SHAMEES I Thunder rumbled in the sky. Above the scintillating glasses of buildings, dark clouds were gathering, blocking the morning sun and casting a shadow on the bustling city. It was just like what the weather reports said. Today, it was going to rain. The first droplets had begun to drizzle down in fast needles. I took the umbrella against the white, round outdoor table, decorated with floral engravings, and was about to push it open when a searing pain lanced on my right arm. The umbrella fell from my hand and, in this sloping street, rolled toward the chair opposite of mine. It had been a while since I was wounded, having rarely taken to the field since I became leader. The small pain was a reminder of my feeble mortality in the dangerous, hidden world that I lived in. I knew my injury wasn’t going to be completely healed anytime soon, but it didn’t mean I had to be bedridden. “Sorry about that.” I bent down and picked the umbrella, opening it to shelter us from the rain. The droplets pounded dully on the umbrella. I saw a woman from another table watch us from behind a newspaper. She was a companion of mine, equipped with training and a gun should things develop unfavorably. I was the one who had ordered her to secretly follow us. If my assassin attacked again, I might not be able to get out with my life the second time. My life was not just my own, so I did value it quite a lot. As for my choices that brought us here, well, they were with reasons, and my companion had her reasons, too. “The mall is nearby. Let’s get going.” I laid a hand on Selena’s shoulder, my fingers brushing with her long, raven hair. Several days after she had tried to kill me, we were now going out to do shopping. Selena Pryce was none other than my teenage assassin. @nyx
