2008, kingsport. the invasion. lt commander jacob sangster requests a discharge from the united states navy in order to join the repulsion of the alien forces. his request granted, he becomes one of the first people to join the initiative fulltime, taking the codename sigma after the class of ship he served aboard. he leaves the rest of his life behind.

but before he was an initiative superhero, jake was just... jake. not that that was bad or anything - comfortable childhood in a charlotte suburb, good grades, pretty painless mutant awakening, the works. he’s always been a little secretive about them - he found out early that kids his age didn’t really trust mutants, felt like other kids having abilities was unfair, so he just... didn’t say anything. never really wanted to, either, just decided that he would if he had to and not before.

it came out in his physical for his enlistment, naturally. dna samples, blood testing, sergeants determined to push him to the absolute limit, and he was fine with that: his country would know the right way to use him, right? after initial training and service, he was assigned to special operations, remaining there until the shit went down. a loyal servant, willing to do whatever he needed to be as useful as possible. his promotion to officer was no accident, given his insight and keen strategic mind - and also no accident that he didn’t mention it as something that had only developed as his powers had shown themselves. still, without a commitment to bureaucracy and bending down to kiss someone’s ass, he wasn’t going to go anywhere.

jake’s naval record shows an honourable discharge, yes, but it also shows several writeups for minor breach of conduct. disobedience. acting without approval. anathema to the unity of the force as a whole.

it suits jake, then, that his tactical aptitude make him a sure fit for tactical consultancy within the initiative - not attached to any one team, he instead lends his service to those dealing with tough odds, fitting himself into their operation with an easy smile and a full set of plans. it’s easy for him. comfortable. he never was good at tying himself down, and it suits him that close ties with the upper echelons of executive control at the initiative let him basically do what he wants. when not lending his services to these team response situations, he primarily works alone.

it helps that he kills at PR events. his soft-spoken southern burr is a subject of wild enthusiasm. the people love sigma because they know that he loves them.

2016, kingsport. sigma is still there. he’s enduring, but he’s restless. he has the rest of his life in front of him, and he has to decide what to do with it.

not the flashiest of powers, but it’s the one jake would say is his most important. his life and career have been characterised by a finely-tuned sense of his surroundings and what their state means. it’s not a psychic skill, but a physical one enabled by a finely-tuned set of senses and a quick mind able to assess the slightest tells in body language or environments. it’s not a conscious process of putting together clues so much as an immediate feeling - ‘we’re being watched’, ‘there’s someone around that corner’, and so on. intent is an open book to jake, and he often knows what someone is going to do a fraction of a second after they themselves do, giving him a knack for one-to-one combat.



what really characterises sigma to the people is his raw power: strength and durability well into the superhuman range with the agility and reflexes to match. sure, it’s not like he can fly, but the sight of the man shooting along at high speed just above street level having pushed off from a wall like an arrow from a bow isn’t uncommon in kingsport. he’s a formidable opponent, particularly when his intuition and reflexes make it hard to even hit him with conventional attacks in the first place.


whether or not jake’s knack for tactical planning and on-the-fly leadership and advice is part of his mutation is something even he’s not that sure of: all he knows is that it only started to develop at around the same time. with some study of the capability of his fellow heroes - something he makes sure to keep on top of, aided by a trained memory - he can formulate plans that combine the strengths and mask the weaknesses of his comrades, or exploit a weak point in the enemy. when on downtime at the initiative building, he can often be found with tablet in hand, learning everything he can to keep his edge.
