i am wondering which people have participated in the defense against the aliens that prompted the creation of GG! Ryou joined in the fight from the other side of the world at the age of ten (ryou didnt join the initiative until he was 17). It would be neat if we could establish some backstory between our chars on what happened!

Jack wasn't Jack back in 2008, so I don't know if he fits the bill -- but back then, it was this Taiwanese girl named Nana, who came to Kingsport via a student exchange program.
I figure she would have helped out as a part of the medics with her knowledge in biomedicine and traditional healing? ... come to think of it, Ryou's draconic form would have most likely triggered memories of her past lives and led to her awakening of her latent powers, or something. (I'm thinking Reactive Adaptation, bc it would be recent enough to not need any reawakening two reincarnations later, but I digress.) She eventually 'died' when the facility she was at was destroyed, though.
Perhaps this isn't as helpful as it ought to be, but if you want a side character who happened to have made an impact, however minor, on your character's life during that period of time, Nana's your girl.

jack hi leo! That idea is great though i want to clarify first if i understood it right. Nana was jack's previous life, was it? If so, i wanted to ask why ryou's transformation triggered her past memories. Mostly just curious with the connection. I think i know why but i wanted to clarify anyway xD
More info on nana would be great too. I would love it if it had an impact on ryou's life. As he was very young at that time, her death - if he happened to have known her for a short time - would surely affect him and be something he recalls every now and then. She may even be part of the reason why he didn't immediately join the initiative.
So yes would plot hard with nana

RYOU: Yup, it's pretty obvious why it triggered, but anyway ... I think it was probably because superpowered people or alien species weren't really that well-known back then, so seeing Ryou (Benedict, back then) transform into a dragon was a shock to her. It probably activated some dormant part of her brain, which made her realize who she really was and her purpose in the world. (It also used to be a dragon in some of its lifetimes, so that's sort of like a 'oh hey bro!!' moment for her brain.) But yes, she would have been in shock for a while even when treating Ryou? Visibly nervous, I mean. Anyway, I'm totally down for Nana having made an impact on Ryou's life. I imagine her as a girl who doesn't speak much English in the first place and relies on an electronic dictionary to translate difficult words? But still she has the drive to help and to learn as much as she can, alien invasion be damned, so she signed up for the front-line medic team where she could help out the most. (I don't have an fc in mind, appearance-wise.) The fight probably wasn't something that was resolved in a week, so she must have treated a bunch of people then ... perhaps Ryou was one of those. With him being a kid that reminded her of her little sister, she would have tried to be nicer, I think? Stuff like giving him candy, or being extra-nice -- saying stuff in simple/poor English like, "I have little sister at home. When she is hurt, she likes candy. You are hurt and this candy is not a big thing, but thank you for help." I think the aliens probably decided to attack the medics someday because they were assisting the heroes and hindering their invasion? Back then, Nana's regenerative powers weren't as great as they are now (+ she had to grapple with a new power), so she probably actively chose to die during the attack and reincarnate as a new being. Not sure if seeing Ryou as a dragon again would have the same effect on Jack in this lifetime (as transformations are getting pretty common w/ various creatures), but I'm sure that revisiting the point of impact from last time would help him figure some things out, if you're into that. But plotting with only Nana is fine with me :j

jack Do you think we can actually thread this as a flashback thread? Ryou flew from the other side of the world so he might have been too exhausted to fight upon coming at Kingsport. Maybe the medics found him in his human form and quickly brought him in and falls asleep. He then wakes up and meets Nana. They interact and later sees the news in the teleivsion. Lil Benedict does what a hero does and goes out to finally help. Then Nana's able to see him transform - maybe she runs after him and catches him transforming as he's about to leave.
We can definitely reunite them through Jack too! It would be a very tearful encounter for Ryou. I'm going to have assimilate my Ryou posts with Nana from now on. What did she look like by the way? Some description or FC in mind would be fine. Appearance would have definitely been vivid for Ryou.

RYOU: Yeah, I've no problem going for a flashback thread. What you've suggested sounds like a good foundation for what's brewing for almost a decade. And then later on we can work out the details for a present-time reunion.
Also, do you think Nana would have known him as Benedict instead of Ryou? She probably would have needed to keep track of her patients. Of course, this is assuming he only went by Ryou after registering as an Initiative superhero.
As for an fc, I figure Chitanda Eru from Hyouka (ref) is pretty similar to what I have in mind? Nana would have been more practical though. I can see her having braces, and her long hair would have been pulled back into a bun (ref, excuse the random guy). She most definitely did not have purple eyes; probably brown originally? Maybe they only turned purple when she used her powers.

RYOU Heyyyy! Here's the resident prankster who was present and active during the invasion. He joined the fray to protect humanity, and maybe just a bit (mostly) for the glory, of course. He's not one of the kids who works well with others normally, but I imagine for that situation he realized if he wanted to survive, it would be better in numbers and ended up cooperating and being a team player. Big ol' werecoyote looking dude tossing out quips at the aliens they were fighting. He might have been particularly interested in a fucking dragon fighting on their side and just picture Spider-man with every hero in Civil War, just gushing about how neat everyone is and not taking the actual fight all that seriously. And he'd most certainly be surprised if he found out the kid was 10 at the time.
I don't know where I'm going with this but if we are bringing together alien invasion veterans, I figure I might as toss Coyote this way.

jack He would have been just plain ole Benedict! He doesn't join the Initiative until seven years later, after all.
Do you mind if I start the thread? I'M GOING TO TRY STARTING IT. I need more practice doing it. Do you have any stuffs for me to add?
coyote YES! More comrades! Ryou wasn't that big yet. Probably only had a max capacity of one rider (VALKYRIE) but still a legitimate dragon! Interesting how both Coyote and Ryou are shapeshifters! Shapeshifter buddies! Though Ryou isn't an expert on it yet. Maybe Coyote-senpai can teach him one day.
How did Coyote fight in the battle by the way? Anything flashy to show?
This 2008 alien invasion thing just makes me think of the whole Avengers movie. Heroes coming together to kick butt!

RYOU A dragon is a dragon and he'll still be impressed because underneath all that suave is a total nerd. You'd think after fighting monsters all his life, a dragon would be nothing new, but I imagine they aren't pretty common these days, on earth at least, so it'd still surprise him! But yes, Coyote wont mind teaching little dragon buddy the ropes when it comes to shapeshifting. He's the master, after all! Only problem will be is discerning what is actual advice and what is just Coyote fucking around and being the trickster he is.
Nothing exceptionally flashy in terms of like manipulating fire and shit, just turning into his true form where he's at his strongest and tearing apart aliens with his claws because why not? He's not as all powerful as he used to be, but he's still pretty tough for an old guy.

RYOU: Go for it! If you could make a small mention about the medical facility/team that would be great, but not necessary.

pre-swordsman alias, elijah participated in the 2008 alien invasion. it is up in the air what he was doing, where he was, who he had been with. i am inclined to say, a healer, but, after that, he joined the initiative, then disappeared to do,... god knows what. i am down for a present time gathering or meetup, that is, if they know or, remember him,... :')

Dr. Maddison participated in the invasion! At the time, he was a neurologist at the biggest hospital in NYC, but he would've helped with any incoming trauma cases since they'd be over capacity with a disaster like that. He'd intentionally take more interest in super-powered people that got injured, so if any heroes/vigilantes/villains came through with a serious head wound, he'd basically assign himself to their case. He's a great guy like that.

kamila and jake were both involved! yes, kamila was 11, but she was assisting her father with disaster response - using constructs to dig through rubble for survivors, moving debris etc. sigma was given leave from his special operations post to join and coordinate the supers involved in organised resistance, and was subsequently one of the very first people to join the initiative once it was formed.
